About the 3mm Society

3mm. The builders scale.

The 3mm Society arose when the Tri-ang TT model railway system was discontinued and from its inception in 1965, the Society has always been about encouraging and supporting those who wish to model railways in 3mm scale, whatever standards or gauge they use.

Today, the Society has over 500 members not only in the UK, but around the world and we meet up throughout the year at Society meetings, the Annual General meeting held in May and local area groups. We keep in contact not only through our newsletter and journal, Mixed Traffic but also through our email bulletin system, website, fortnightly Zoom meetings and an independently run discussion forum.

In 2025 the Society celebrated its 60th Anniversary.

This video has been produced to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the 3mm Society.

Today, as there is no major ready to run support, we are proudly a ‘modellers scale’.

This video shows just what is possible in what we like to think of as the ‘ideal’ scale.

3mm scale is primarily a modeller’s scale. Apart from the ageing but still very serviceable Tri-ang TT stock, nearly everything has to be made for oneself, from kits and components or from scratch. The scale has undoubted benefits in terms of space and cost, as it is large enough to incorporate plenty of detail but small enough to fit in most homes…the perfect scale.
Excellence is readily achievable as 3mm scale has kept pace with developments and has made its own innovations, which will ensure that it remains equal to the opportunities offered by other scales. Above all, the enthusiasm, enterprise and friendliness of its devotees mean that it is a scale that can be enjoyed all the way from ‘Tri-ang nostalgia’ to exhibition quality model maker. You can never be accused of ‘following the pack’ with 3mm scale.
