The layout is built to a scale of 3mm to 1ft and a track gauge of 12mm. It depicts the now disappeared LNWR / LMS station in the town of Uppingham set around 1960 when the line was just about to be closed to passenger traffic, before being closed completely in 1964. It was the only terminus branch line in England’s smallest county, Rutland. It is made as accurately as possible using a limited amount of photographs and drawings, however, the overall effect is more important than running to strict prototype practice (Just 5 trains a day!), so some running ‘licence’ is adopted from time to time. There are no bright garish colours on the layout as it depicts the dull, grimy ambience of railways which was prominent during the steam era. It is operated entirely on DC using Gaugemaster analogue controllers and vintage Hammant & Morgan solenoid point motors, and has been featured in both BRM and Model Rail magazines.
It measures 16ft x 2ft approximately, splits into four sections, and has it’s own legs and lighting gantry. It requires two to three operators ideally with a 2ft minimum depth behind the layout. It is is available for exhibition for a two day minimum show and travelling expenses will incur dependent on location. Depending on distance, overnight accommodation may also be required (two rooms to accommodate the full team). The whole layout fits into my car so hiring of a van is not required. Unfortunately exhibiting at a one day show is not economically viable due to the time it takes to load, set up and strike, however, please enquire about my other layout in 3mm ‘Ashburton’ which is currently under construction which can easily be accommodated for one day.
