What will happen to your 3mm models?
Many members will recognise that modelling is an intense but often a solitary pleasure, rarely shared with other members of the family – so, when a modeller dies, not only do their family have to cope with their grief, they do not always know what to do with the “toys”. While the layout and stock are precious to the modeller and other like-minded individuals, to the family they may be seen as playthings of little value. 3mm models which could be worth several hundred pounds might be given away or be under-priced by cowboys clearing a house and giving a poor return for what they take.
The Society recommends that members discuss with their partner and family how they would like their collections of 3mm models to be disposed of when they die. The modeller may wish some or all of the value of the stock to go to a particular person or cause, or even to the Society. It is best to express this specifically in writing in a will or codicil, otherwise your wishes may not be met. If a modeller has not clearly stated wishes about the future of the models, the family or executor may not receive any expert help in sorting out and selling models. Local group members have in the past helped families to sort and dispose of models, often without their needing to take an active part in what could be a distressing task.
The Society’s second-hand sales officer can give an unbiased valuation of stock and they may also be able to buy an entire collection at an agreed price so as to minimise any disruption or upset to your partner or family. Members who would like their partners or family to benefit from the value of their collection may like to mention this to them, and make sure that they have a note of the Society’s contact details. https://3mmsociety.org.uk/wills-and-estates/
