3mm Scale (TT) – 12mm Gauge

“Yatbury” is not a finescale 3mm layout but has been constructed by an “average modeller” to an average standard that will readily accept the old Tri-ang locomotives and rolling stock as well as more refined items produced by the 3mm Society and 3SMR Models.

This portable layout measures 15’ x 1’6” and dismantles into five individual baseboards for transportation to exhibitions in a family estate car.

The setting for the layout is the West of England circa summer 1959, predominately BR Western region with the occasional Southern Region train appearing.

Track is 3mm Society plastic trackbase with Society rail with hand built points using code B2 flat bottom rail soldered to copper clad sleepers. All points are manually operated using the wire in tube method connected to DP/DT slide switches.

The track plan of sweeping curves gives a pleasing appearance to the layout. The lineside and scenic features are all scratch built. All the buildings have been constructed using card in the main but with some plasticard.

Locomotives employed all use the old reliable Tri-ang chassis and mechanisms. Some bodies are the originals suitably weathered for authenticity, others are white metal kits purchased from the 3m Society. Rolling stock is a mixture of Tri-ang, Kitmaster and 3mm Society kits together with a few scratch built items.

During its 12 year life the layout has been exhibited frequently. In November 1992 “Yatbury” appeared in the Railway Modeller magazine. More recently the layout has changed from a continuous oval shape to an “end to end” arrangement.
